Public Works Maintenance Person – Roads 1

The Town of Wasaga Beach is seeking an energetic, self-motivated individuals to perform the duties and responsibilities of “Roads 1”, Public Works Maintenance Person.

Responsibilities: Reporting to the Public Works Foremen, this individual will complement the Public Works staff in the maintenance and construction of the municipal roads and right-of-ways. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Grass mowing and tree trimming;
  • Asphalt patching (cold and hot);
  • Shoulder maintenance and washouts;
  • Traffic control, including installation of traffic signs and devices;
  • Sidewalk and curb maintenance;
  • Garbage and recycling collection;
  • Maintenance of storm sewer and drainage facilities;
  • Construction maintenance projects;
  • Winter maintenance activities, including snow plowing, sanding/salting, sidewalk and hydrant snow clearing.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • OSSD or equivalent combination of education;
  • Demonstrated experience in roads maintenance and construction activities, including snow plow operations. Pipe laying and concrete forming / finishing, considered an asset;
  • Possess a valid Class DZ Driver’s License in good standing and able to provide a current, acceptable driver’s abstract;
  • Knowledge and experience in the safe operation of light and heavy duty vehicles, servicing and road construction techniques and truck safety;
  • Be physically able to perform the physical requirements of the position with the ability of heavy lifting and withstand extreme weather conditions;
  • Demonstrated skill in using hand tools and in operating of machines and equipment (ie. mowers, compactors, chainsaws, etc.) commonly used in Public Works;
  • Knowledge and understanding of, and ability to apply, relevant safety policies, standards and legislation (Ontario OHSA, WHMIS, OTM Book 7, etc.);
  • Ability to provide an acceptable criminal records check upon hire;
  • Valid Emergency First Aid and CPR certificates considered an asset;
  • Ability to work with and contribute positively to a service oriented team with good communication skills;
  • Ability to Work Winter Operations Shift Times (5:00 am – 1:30 pm OR 1:30 pm – 10:00 pm);
  • Ability to work overtime for road construction, maintenance and snow removal operations as may be required;

 Hourly rate: $29.01, per Schedule ‘A’ of the Collective Agreement

WATER/WASTEWATER OPERATOR

The Town of Wasaga Beach is seeking an energetic and self-motivated professional to perform the duties and responsibilities of the Water/Wastewater Operator.

 General Responsibilities:  The Water/Wastewater Operator will be responsible for assisting in the day to day operation and maintenance of the: Municipal Wastewater Collection System; Water Distribution System; Water Meter Installation and Maintenance Program; and all other duties currently performed by Water and Sewer Staff or that may be required as a result of Ministry Inspections and/or changes in legislation. The ideal candidate must have a focus on being a team player, compatible with other employees and carry themselves in a manner which exemplifies professionalism representing the Town of Wasaga Beach at all times.

Qualifications:

  • OSSD or equivalent combination of education;
  • Class I Certification for Water Distribution and Class I Certification for Wastewater Collection;
  • Previous experience in water distribution and wastewater collection systems;
  • Knowledge of water distribution operations and legislative requirements as they pertain to a Drinking Water system;
  • Ability to interpret utility and servicing plans;
  • Completes and maintains all daily legislative and non-legislative records as they pertain to the Distribution and Collection Systems;
  • Proficient in Windows, Outlook and Microsoft Office applications;
  • Possess strong interpersonal and organizational skills;
  • Possess and maintain a valid Class “D” License with “Z” Endorsement;
  • Be physically able to perform the physical requirements of the position with the ability of heavy lifting and withstand extreme weather conditions; support winter operations, as necessary, including but not limited to plowing, sanding or salting operations;
  • Available to work overtime, respond to emergency work and will be part of a rotating on-call schedule;
  • Knowledge and understanding of, and ability to apply, relevant safety policies, standards and legislation (Ontario OHSA, WHMIS, etc.);
  • Valid Emergency First Aid and CPR certificates considered an asset;
  • Ability to work with and contribute positively to a service oriented team with good communication skills;
  • Ability to provide upon hire a copy of a valid Ontario driver’s license, an acceptable driver’s abstract and criminal reference check – vulnerable sector;

Responsibilities:

• Ability to read, blueprints and drawings to identify location, grade and slope.
• Set up string line, according to survey layout information for sidewalks and curb.
• Hand form using appropriate materials, i.e. steel forms, lumber, pickets pins, etc.
• Check for granular base and steel, reinforcement materials, and direct. placement of concrete into forms or onto surfaces according to grade.
• Ensure proper concrete mix and consistency is kept and maintained during the pour.
• Assist with pouring and finishing of concrete.
• Follow all safety regulations and guidelines on the job site.
• Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors.

Qualifications:

• Proficient in string line, set up, determining grade, change, and identifying discrepancies.
• Ability to read and understand blueprint designs to determine proper location of concrete.
• Basic math skills for measuring and calculating dimensions.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to produce precise and accurate work.
• Excellent, problem-solving, skills, and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
• Willingness to work, flexible hours and overtime as required
• Proficient in the use of power tools related to form work assembly and concrete placement.
• Valid G drivers license.

Duties Under Estimator
• Review with management regarding tender opportunities and prioritizing these opportunities
• Prepare work to be estimated by gathering proposals, blueprints, specifications and related
documents
• Analyze blueprints and other documentation to prepare time, cost, materials, and labor
estimates (quantity take off)
• Note discrepancies in the tender information and bring to the attention of management for
discussion on how to deal with the discrepancy
• Present prepared quote to management including the quantity take off information
• Liaison with the Contract Manager/Site Superintendent regarding important details relating to
the tender and how it was quoted
• Consult with the Site Super/Foreman during the tender stage
• Maintain a continuous flow of information back and forth between the site and office
• Consult with clients, vendors, personnel in other departments or construction foremen to
discuss and formulate estimates and resolve issues
• Confer with contractors and subcontractors on changes and adjustments to cost estimates
during the project life
• Prepare estimates for use in selecting vendors or subcontractors
